Parks Survey – dog owners take note

The City of Piedmont is conducting a sustainability assessment of city parks to define land uses and landscaping practices that will maintain these resources for future generations. To that end, city staff is conducting pop-up sessions in the parks this week as well as an online survey to learn what residents like most about the parks. See the link below for the schedule of park pop-ups and to take the survey.

But don’t get too creative with your responses. Before taking the survey respondents are forewarned:

“This is not a Parks Master Plan and this initiative will not determine new facilities or amenities.”

Fair enough but what does determine new facilities? Direction from City Council perhaps? At the April council meetings on the closure of the Linda Dog park and the July meeting when the Council awarded the contract for the sustainability study, a majority of Council members repeatedly asked about the viability of a fenced dog park at the Oakland Avenue bridge and several recommended that staff prioritize that initiative during the current sustainability study. That direction from Council seemed sufficient for staff to begin working on this project now but certainly the concept should be considered during the sustainability study. Likewise, a scaled-back off-leash area in Linda Park should be examined. The Water Board did not rule out the use of Linda Park as a dog park, nor did the Park Commission.

So by all means, take the survey and tell the city what you like about the parks. But also what you’d like to see – Council seems to have heard you.
