Equitable Grading For Dummies
As a neighbor to PHS students, I have only recently heard of the term “equitable grading”. Having children out of college and off in the real world, has afforded me time to connect and converse with newer neighbors in my area who have PHS students. In one of these conversations, a parent mentioned the disconnect and frustration her daughter was experiencing with something called an “equitable grading policy” that some PHS teachers have adopted in their classrooms. The parent explained that her high goal setting daughter, who puts in endless hours at home on her homework while balancing sports in and out of school, is at her wits end because of the policy. The parent explained that kids in classes are giving up because there is no reason to push themselves when teachers are giving out a 50% minimum mark to kids that give zero effort in class and these same kids can ultimately obtain a high grade with minimal work. The parent explained that the olden days of 0-100% are long gone and district leaders who continuously tout an excellent education are full of cr*p.
